The Ventuari River is a very important river in southern Venezuela. It is the largest tributary of the Orinoco River. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.

The Ventuari River starts in the south-central part of Venezuela. It flows from the Guiana Highlands towards the southwest. Finally, it joins the mighty Orinoco River. The Ventuari River is about 520 kilometers (323 miles) long. Its main branch is called the Manapiare River.

About the Ventuari River

The Ventuari River is special because it flows through a unique area. This area is known as the Guayanan Highlands moist forests ecoregion. An ecoregion is a large area of land or water that has its own special plants and animals.

A Clearwater River

The Ventuari River is also known as a clearwater river. This means its water is very clear. It does not carry much mud or dirt. This makes it different from many other rivers. It is the biggest clearwater river that flows into the Orinoco.

Amazing Fish Life

The clear waters of the Ventuari River are home to many different kinds of fish. As of 2006, scientists knew of 470 different fish species living there. Some of these fish are endemic. This means they are found only in the Ventuari River and nowhere else in the world!

Since 2006, even more new species of fish have been discovered in the river. This shows how rich and special the Ventuari River's ecosystem is. It is a vital place for many unique aquatic creatures.
