Vera's History
How Vera Got Its Name
Vera was not always called Vera. It was first known as White Flat. In 1890, its name was changed to Vera. This was done to avoid confusion with another place in Texas. That other place already had a post office with the name White Flat.
The person who helped name Vera was G. W. Ballard. He was the first postmaster of the community. A postmaster is in charge of a local post office. Mr. Ballard named the community after a girl named Vera Kellogg. She was the daughter of one of the first people to settle there.

Vera also had its own school for many years. However, in 1960, the school joined with others. Students from Vera then went to schools in nearby Benjamin and Seymour.
