A Look Back: History of Vera Cruz
Vera Cruz was first planned out in 1848. It was named after a city in Mexico called Veracruz.
The town was originally called Newville. However, the U.S. Post Office asked for the name to be changed. This was because there was already another town named Newville in DeKalb County, Indiana.
When officials were choosing a county seat for Wells County, they considered both Newville (Vera Cruz) and Bluffton. At that time, both towns were about the same size. Bluffton was chosen as the county seat. This was likely because it was more in the center of Wells County.
A post office opened in Vera Cruz in 1850. It served the town for many years. The post office closed down in 1942.
