Verbena, also called Summerfield, is a small community in Chilton County, Alabama, United States. It is not an official city or town. The community got its name from the beautiful flower that grows there.
Verbena became a popular place for wealthy people from Montgomery, the state capital. They came here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This was especially true when people were getting sick from yellow fever in the cities. Many big, fancy homes, some of which have been fixed up, still stand in Verbena. They remind everyone of its interesting past.
Verbena's Early Days
The community of Verbena grew up next to a railroad track. This track is now owned by CSX Transportation. In its best days, Verbena had two hotels, a bank, a post office, and a general store. Many of these old buildings are now gone or closed. However, the Verbena United Methodist Church is still open. It is located on County Road 59 near the center of the community.
In 1890, the U.S. Census counted 756 people living in Verbena. This made it the biggest community in Chilton County at that time.
Verbena Today
Today, Verbena is a peaceful community. It is located just outside of Clanton. You can find Verbena on U.S. Route 31. It is about four miles south of Interstate 65 exit 205.

It teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school's sports teams are called the Red Devils. The Chilton County Sheriff's Department keeps the community safe. The Verbena Volunteer Fire and Rescue helps in emergencies.
