History of Chilton County

Chilton County was first created on December 30, 1868. It was first called Baker County, named after Alfred Baker. The first main town was Grantville.

People living in the county asked the Alabama government to change the county's name. They chose to rename it Chilton County on December 17, 1874. This was to honor William Parish Chilton, Sr., even though he didn't live in the county. In 1871, the county's main town moved to what is now Clanton. This happened after the old courthouse in Grantville burned down.

Later, in 1942, the U.S. Navy named a new ship the USS Chilton. This was done to honor Chilton County.
