History of Verdon
Verdon was officially planned and laid out in 1886. It was named after the city of Verdun, which is in France. A post office, where people could send and receive mail, opened in Verdon in 1887. It stayed open for many years until it closed in 1982.
A railroad line, run by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, used to serve Verdon. This line connected the towns of Doland and Groton. The last time passengers could travel by train to Verdon was in 1965. The entire railroad line was eventually closed down in 1970.
The Blizzard of 1888
On January 12, 1888, a very sudden and severe snowstorm, called a blizzard, hit Verdon. Students at the local school, which was about a mile north of town, got stuck because of the heavy snow.
A group of people from the town quickly organized a rescue mission. They used a wagon that could travel on the railroad tracks to reach the school. To bring the children back safely, they formed a "human chain." This meant people held onto each other, guiding the students from the school to the wagon. All the students were successfully brought back to town safely.
