A Look Back in Time
How Vermontville Started
Vermontville was first settled by people from the state of Vermont. This happened a long time ago, in the early 1800s. The first person to be in charge of the mail, called a postmaster, was Josiah J. Alexander. He started this job in 1854.
Early Businesses
In the past, Vermontville had several important businesses. A sawmill was built in 1848, and another one in 1850. Sawmills are places where logs are cut into lumber. A starch mill also operated here from 1873 to about 1876. This mill made starch, often from potatoes.
A foundry was built in 1861. A foundry is a factory where metal is melted and shaped into different products. This one made tools for farming like plows, cultivators, and scrapers. It closed around 1889 because new products came in by train, making it hard to compete. Farming was the most important business for the people living here. In 1856, the first church was built in Vermontville.
