Vermouth facts for kids
Vermouth is a special kind of wine that has been changed into a stronger spirit. It usually contains about 15 to 18 percent alcohol. To give it its unique taste, different herbs and spices are added to the wine.
The name "Vermouth" comes from a plant called Artemisia absinthium. This plant gives Vermouth a slightly bitter flavor. People often use Vermouth to make cocktails.
History of Vermouth
The Vermouth we know today was first made in Turin, Italy, in 1757. Later, in the 1800s, it also started to be made in France. Today, Vermouth is also very popular in some parts of Spain.
How Vermouth is Used
Besides being used in drinks, Vermouth can also be used in cooking. Sometimes, it is used instead of white wine in recipes.
Vermouth vs. Absinthe
It's important to know that Vermouth is not the same as another spirit called Absinthe. Even though Absinthe also uses the Artemisia absinthium plant, it has a much higher alcohol content, usually between 45 and 50 percent.
