Vernon A. Carey Jr. (born February 25, 2001) is an American professional basketball player. He last played for Karşıyaka Basket in Turkey. Before playing professionally, he was a college basketball star for the Duke Blue Devils. He was considered one of the best high school players in the country.

High School Basketball Journey
Vernon Carey Jr. played basketball for four years at University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was a standout player from his first year.
Freshman and Sophomore Success
As a freshman, he scored about 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds per game. His team had a good record of 15 wins and 9 losses. In his second year, he improved even more, averaging 22 points and 8 rebounds. He helped his team win a Florida district state championship. After this season, he was recognized as one of the best players in his area.
Junior Year Highlights
In his junior year, Vernon Carey Jr. averaged 26 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He led his team to an amazing 36 wins and only 2 losses. They won the 2018 Florida 5A state championship. They also won two big tournaments: the City of Palms Invitational and the John Wall Invitational. His team even reached the finals of the High School National Tournament.
Senior Season and Top Recruit Status
For his senior year, Carey averaged 21.7 points and 9 rebounds per game. His team successfully defended their state championship title. Even though Carey was not able to play in the final game, his team still won.
On December 6, 2018, Vernon Carey Jr. announced he would play college basketball at Duke University. He was ranked as one of the top six players in the country. All major scouting services rated him as a five-star recruit. He was also chosen to play in the 2019 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. This game features the best high school basketball players in the nation.

College Basketball at Duke

Before his first college season, Vernon Carey Jr. was already on several important watchlists. These lists name players expected to be the best in college basketball.
Freshman Year Achievements
On November 12, he achieved his first "double-double" of the season. This means he scored at least 10 points and had at least 10 rebounds in one game. He scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a big win. A few days later, he scored a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds.
On November 21, Carey had an amazing game with 31 points and 12 rebounds. The very next night, he scored 20 points and 10 rebounds again. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2K Sports Classic tournament. He also earned "player of the week" and "freshman of the week" honors in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Throughout his freshman year, Carey continued to play exceptionally well. He had many more double-doubles and high-scoring games. He scored 26 points and 11 rebounds against Michigan State. He also had 20 points and 10 rebounds against Wofford.
Awards and Recognition
Vernon Carey Jr. was named ACC Freshman of the Year at the end of the season. He was also chosen for the First Team All-ACC. As a freshman, he averaged 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. He earned National Freshman of the Year awards from two major basketball organizations. After this successful season, he decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft to become a professional player.
Professional Basketball Career
Charlotte Hornets (2020–2022)
The Charlotte Hornets picked Vernon Carey Jr. as the 32nd player in the 2020 NBA draft. He signed a contract with the Hornets on November 30, 2020. He played his first NBA game on December 30, 2020. On April 16, 2021, he scored his highest points in an NBA game, getting 21 points and 6 rebounds.
During his time with the Hornets, he also played for their minor league team, the Greensboro Swarm. This team is part of the NBA G League.
Washington Wizards (2022–2023)
On February 10, 2022, Carey was traded to the Washington Wizards. He played for the Wizards until March 1, 2023, when he was released. On April 10, 2022, he scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds in a game against his former team, the Charlotte Hornets.
Utah Jazz (2023)
Vernon Carey Jr. signed with the Utah Jazz on April 8, 2023. He played for them in the 2023 NBA Summer League. After the Summer League, he was released by the Jazz.
Pınar Karşıyaka (2023–2024)
On August 30, 2023, Carey signed with Pınar Karşıyaka. This is a professional basketball team in Turkey. He played for them during the 2023-2024 season.

About Vernon Carey Jr.'s Family
Vernon Carey Jr. is the son of Latavia and Vernon Carey. His father, Vernon Carey Sr., was also a professional athlete. He played football for the NFL's Miami Dolphins from 2004 to 2011.
