Verona's History
People have lived in the Verona area since the early 1700s. Some of the first families to settle here were the Foy, Padgett, Rochelle, Ottoway, Brown, Davis, Fisher, and Parker families. Many of their descendants still live in Verona today.
The Railroad's Story
A long time ago, in 1897, a railroad track was built through Verona. This track connected Jacksonville to Wilmington. Trains used this railway from 1897 until 1984.
Soon after the tracks were laid, a large, three-story train station was built in Verona. It was located where Loy Avenue and Verona Road meet. Even though trains ran until 1984, the train station closed earlier, in the late 1940s.
The railway was mainly used to carry lumber and other supplies. During World War II and the Korean War, it became very important. It was used to transport Marines from the nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to the port of Wilmington. From there, the Marines would be sent to different parts of the world.
In 1961, the old train station was taken down. Its warehouse was then used as Verona's Fire Department.
Changes to the Post Office
For many years, from around 1900 to the 1960s, Verona had its own post office. This meant people living there had a "Verona, NC" address.
However, in the 1960s, the county changed how its towns were organized. Verona became part of rural Jacksonville. Because of this, Verona lost its post office. People's addresses changed to "Jacksonville, NC," and their mail was delivered on the city's postal route.
Camp Lejeune and Verona
In 1941, the United States Government started building Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. This base is the largest amphibious (meaning it trains for land and water operations) base in the country.
To build the base, the government used a process called Eminent Domain. This meant they could buy private land for public use, even if the owners didn't want to sell. Many Verona residents lost land that had been in their families for over a hundred years. This land was needed to create the large military base.
