This group works to improve healthcare for many people. She also serves on the board of directors for Sharecare, a health and wellness company.

Early Life

Veronica Mallett went to Barnard College and finished in 1979. She then studied medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, graduating in 1983.

Career

Early Career

Dr. Mallett returned to Wayne State University in 1991 for a special training program called a fellowship. After finishing in 1993, she became an assistant professor there. This means she taught medical students.

In 1994, she became the director of the Women's Continence and Pelvic Surgery Center at Hutzel Women's Hospital. This center helps women with bladder and pelvic problems. By 1999, she was promoted to lead the residency program, which trains new doctors. In 2000, she became an associate professor at Wayne State.

In 2005, Dr. Mallett moved to Tennessee. She became the first female leader of a medical department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. There, she also helped improve the quality of healthcare.

Later, in 2011, Dr. Mallett helped start the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Texas Tech University in El Paso. She was the first person to lead this department. She helped create a new medical school and health center. This was important because El Paso, which is on the U.S. border with Mexico, needed more doctors.

Meharry Medical College

On March 1, 2017, Dr. Mallett went back to Tennessee to become the Dean at Meharry Medical College. A Dean is a top leader at a college. She wanted Meharry to be a great example of providing excellent and affordable care. She also focused on telemedicine, which is healthcare given through technology like video calls. She made sure students learned about this growing field.

While Dr. Mallett was a leader at Meharry, the students needed new places for their hospital training. She worked with the college president and HCA Healthcare to make a new agreement. This allowed Meharry students to train at TriStar Southern Hills Hospital in Nashville.

Dr. Mallett also created a partnership with the Detroit Medical Center. This allowed Meharry students to study and train at hospitals in Detroit. For example, Sinai-Grace Hospital welcomed Meharry students for training.

She also worked with MTSU and the state of Tennessee. They made a deal for six college students to get a fast-track medical degree. In return, these students would practice medicine in Tennessee for at least two years.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mallett helped Nashville's emergency team. She helped organize in-person COVID-19 testing at Meharry and at Nissan Stadium.

In 2021, Meharry started a new company called Meharry Medical College Ventures. Dr. Mallett was named its first president and CEO.
