The District of Vevey was a special area in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Think of a canton like a state, and a district like a county within that state. The main town, or "seat," of this district was the city of Vevey.

In 2008, the District of Vevey changed. It became part of a newer, larger area called the Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut District. So, the old District of Vevey doesn't exist as a separate district anymore.

The District of Vevey was one of many districts in the canton of Vaud. These districts helped organize how the region was governed. Each district had several smaller towns and villages, which are called "communes" in Switzerland.

How Districts Are Organized

Districts in Switzerland are made up of different "cercles," which are like sub-districts or circles. Each cercle then contains several communes. The District of Vevey had four main cercles, each with its own towns and villages.

Cercle of Corsier

The Cercle of Corsier included a few communes. These were Chardonne, Corseaux, Corsier-sur-Vevey, and Jongny. The town of Corsier-sur-Vevey was the most important one in this group. In 2006, this cercle had a total population of about 7,353 people.

Cercle of La Tour-de-Peilz

This cercle was named after the town of La Tour-de-Peilz. It also included the communes of Blonay and Saint-Légier-La Chiésaz. La Tour-de-Peilz was the largest town in this cercle. Together, these communes had around 20,313 people living there in 2006.

Cercle of Montreux

The Cercle of Montreux was home to the famous town of Montreux and the smaller commune of Veytaux. Montreux is well-known for its beautiful location by Lake Geneva and its music festivals. This cercle had a population of about 23,973 people in 2006, with Montreux being the biggest part of that.

Cercle of Vevey

The Cercle of Vevey was the smallest in terms of the number of communes, as it only included the city of Vevey itself. Vevey was the main city of the entire district. In 2006, about 16,927 people lived in Vevey.
