How the Vice President Role Began
Before 2008, Nepal had a king. In January 2007, a new temporary rulebook was made. This rulebook took away all power from the king. A special group called the Nepalese Constituent Assembly was elected. Their main job was to decide if Nepal would keep its king or become a republic.
Nepal Becomes a Republic
On May 28, 2008, the Assembly made a big decision. They voted to end the monarchy. This meant Nepal would no longer have a king. Instead, it would become a republic. This is how the roles of President and Vice President were created.
First Elections for Leaders
A change to the temporary rulebook said that top leaders would be chosen. These leaders included the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. They were supposed to be chosen through a "political understanding." If they couldn't agree, an election would happen.
The first election for these new roles was in 2008. The political parties could not agree on who should be President or Vice President. So, an election was held. Parmanand Jha became the first Vice President of Nepal. He was supported by several political parties.
