What Does the Vice President Do?
The vice president has a special role in the government of Taiwan. Their main job is to be ready to step in if the president cannot do their duties.
Taking Over as President
If the president's job becomes empty, the vice president becomes president. They will serve for the rest of the original president's term. If both the president and vice president cannot do their jobs, then the head of the Executive Yuan (like a prime minister) steps in temporarily.
The vice president also acts as president if the president is temporarily unable to work. This ensures that the country always has a leader. The vice president does not have many other official powers on their own.
How is the Vice President Chosen?
For a long time, the vice president was chosen by a group called the National Assembly. But things changed in 1996.
Now, the vice president is chosen by a direct vote from the people of Taiwan. They run for office on the same ticket as the president. This means you vote for both the president and vice president together.
Important Vice Presidents in History
Some vice presidents have had to step up and become president. This happened when a president passed away while in office.
- Yen Chia-kan became president in 1975 after President Chiang Kai-shek passed away.
- Lee Teng-hui became president in 1988 after President Chiang Ching-kuo passed away.
Acting President Li Zongren
One interesting case was Li Zongren. He was the vice president and acted as president from January 1949 to March 1950. This happened during a difficult time, the Chinese Civil War. President Chiang Kai-shek had stepped down, but it was not clear if it was permanent.
During this time, Li Zongren even traveled to the United States for medical treatment. He was seen as a foreign leader there. Eventually, Chiang Kai-shek returned to his duties.
Because the vice president's job has limited formal power, some vice presidents have also held another important job at the same time. For example, Chen Cheng, Yen Chia-kan, and Lien Chan all served as the head of the Executive Yuan (premier) while they were vice president.

Vice President's Official Symbols
