Vicenç Navarro (born in 1937 in Gironella, Spain) is a Spanish expert in how societies work. He studies both politics and how people live together.
For over 30 years, he has been a professor at Johns Hopkins University in the US. He teaches about health and public policy. This means he looks at how government rules affect people's health.
He is also a special professor (called emeritus professor) at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. He helps lead a special center there that focuses on public policy. This center is a team effort between Johns Hopkins and Pompeu Fabra universities. He also directs a project called the Observatorio Social de España, which studies how countries help their citizens.
Education and Learning
Vicenç Navarro has studied at many different universities. These include the University of Barcelona, the London School of Economics, and University of Oxford. He also studied at the University of Edinburgh.
He earned his DrPH (Doctor of Public Health) degree from Johns Hopkins University. This degree focuses on improving health for groups of people. He also has special honorary degrees in Economics from the University of Lleida and the University of Málaga in Spain.
His Career and Work
Besides teaching at universities, Vicenç Navarro has helped many governments. He has given advice to important groups like the United Nations and the World Health Organization. These groups work to solve big problems around the world.
He also advised the leader of the European Parliament. In 1984, he helped Jesse Jackson with his campaign to become president of the US. He gave advice on health policy during that time.
Navarro has written 24 books. These books have been translated into many languages. Some of his recent books include The Social Underdevelopment of Spain and There Are Alternatives. He also wrote Attack on Democracy and Wellbeing.
He often writes for the Spanish newspaper Público. He also contributes to the website Rebelion.org.
He won a special award, the Anagrama essay prize, for his book Insufficient Wellbeing, Incomplete Democracy. This award is like the Pulitzer Prize in Spain. In 2014, he received the Stebbins Medal from Johns Hopkins University. Experts say he is one of the most often quoted Spanish scientists in social sciences around the world.
