Victor-Maurice, Count of Broglie (born March 12, 1647 – died August 4, 1727) was a French soldier and a high-ranking general. He was known for his long career serving the French king.

Who Was Victor-Maurice de Broglie?

Victor-Maurice de Broglie came from a very old and important family. They were originally from a region called Piedmont. His father was François-Marie, also a Count of Broglie. His mother was Angelique de Vassal.

Early Life and Family

Victor-Maurice was born in the De Broglie family home in France. When his father passed away, Victor-Maurice inherited several important titles. These included being the Count of Revello and Broglie. He also became the Marquis of Senonches. On top of that, he was put in charge of the area of La Bassee, near the city of Lille.

A Life in the Military

Victor-Maurice spent most of his life as a soldier. He fought in many wars for King Louis XIV. He served under famous military leaders like Condé and Turenne. One of the big wars he fought in was the Franco-Dutch War. He was with Turenne during a campaign in 1654 to capture the town of Stenay.

He rose through the ranks in the French army. In 1676, he became a maréchal de camp. This was a high military rank, similar to a brigadier general today. He was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1688. Finally, in 1724, he reached the highest military rank in France. He became a marshal of France. This was just three years before he passed away.

His Family's Legacy

Victor-Maurice had three sons. Sadly, one of his sons died before him. His second son, Charles-Guillaume, became the next Marquis de Broglie. His third son, François-Marie, also became a famous general. Like his father, François-Marie also became a marshal of France. He was the first person in their family to be given the title of Duke of Broglie.
