Victoria Ann Roberts was born in Detroit, Michigan. She became a very important person in the legal world. Her work as a judge involved making fair decisions based on the law.
Her Early Life and Schooling
Victoria Roberts went to the University of Michigan. She earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts in 1973. Later, she studied law at Northeastern University School of Law. She received her law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1977.
Her Career Before Becoming a Judge
After law school, Victoria Roberts worked as a research attorney. This job was for the Michigan Court of Appeals from 1976 to 1977. She also taught legal research and writing at the Detroit College of Law. This was from 1977 to 1978.
She then worked as a private lawyer in Michigan from 1977 to 1985. From 1985 to 1988, she was an assistant United States attorney. This means she worked for the U.S. government to represent them in court. She returned to private law practice in Detroit from 1988 to 1998. She also helped Dennis Archer when he became Mayor in 1993.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On July 31, 1997, President Bill Clinton chose Victoria Roberts to be a federal judge. She was nominated for a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The United States Senate voted for her on June 26, 1998. Everyone agreed, and she officially became a judge on June 29, 1998.
Her Time as a Judge
Victoria Roberts served as a judge for many years. On February 25, 2021, she took on a new role called senior status. This means she could still hear cases but with a reduced workload. She officially retired from her active duties on September 1, 2023.

Travel Restrictions Decision
On February 3, 2017, Judge Roberts made a big decision. She ordered the U.S. government to stop enforcing a travel restriction. This restriction was put in place by President Donald Trump. It limited travel for people from seven Muslim-majority countries. Her order specifically protected people who were legal, permanent residents of the U.S.
Travel Ban Lawsuit
Judge Roberts was also involved in a lawsuit called Arab American Civil Rights League v. Trump. This case was about President Trump's travel ban. On May 11, 2017, she ordered the Trump administration to share a special memo. This memo was written by adviser Rudy Giuliani. It was thought to be written to make the travel order seem fair to all religions.
