Victorino Montaño Mapa (February 25, 1855 – April 12, 1927) was a very important Filipino lawyer and judge. He became the second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. This was during the time when the United States governed the Philippines.

Victorino Mapa's Early Life and Education

Victorino Mapa was born in Kalibo, Capiz, in the Philippines. He learned a lot at home when he was a child. Later, he went to Colegio de San Juan de Letran and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree.

He then studied law at the University of Santo Tomas. He finished his law degree when he was 25 years old. This prepared him for a long career in public service.

His Career as a Judge and Official

Becoming an Associate Justice

In 1901, a new Supreme Court of the Philippines was created. Victorino Mapa was chosen to be an Associate Justice. This means he was one of the main judges on the highest court in the country. He served alongside other important judges like Cayetano Arellano and Florentino Torres.

Serving as Secretary of Finance and Justice

In 1913, Victorino Mapa left the Supreme Court for a new role. He became the Secretary of Finance and Justice. In this job, he helped manage the country's money and legal system. During this time, he also worked on the Taft Commission. This commission was like an upper house of the Philippine government.

Becoming Chief Justice

In 1920, the first Chief Justice, Cayetano Arellano, retired. Victorino Mapa was then chosen to become the second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. This was a very high position, making him the top judge in the Philippines.

However, his time as Chief Justice was short. His health was not very good, so he had to retire early. He stepped down from his position on October 31, 1921.

Later Life and Legacy

Victorino Mapa passed away on April 12, 1927. Just 17 days later, his friend and fellow retired justice, Florentino Torres, also died.

Victorino Mapa left a lasting mark on the Philippines. Several places in Manila are named after him. These include Victorino Mapa High School, Victorino Mapa Street, and the nearby V. Mapa LRT Station. These names honor his important contributions to the country.
