Vijay Anand (born January 22, 1934 – died February 23, 2004) was a famous Indian filmmaker. People also knew him as Goldie Anand. He was a director, producer, writer, editor, and actor. He is best known for popular films like Guide (1965), Teesri Manzil (1966), Jewel Thief (1967), and Johny Mera Naam (1970). Most of his movies were made under the company Navketan Films, which his family owned. He was part of the well-known Anand family in the film industry.

About His Life

Vijay Anand was born in Gurdaspur, Punjab, India. His father, Pishori Lal Anand, was a successful lawyer. Vijay was the youngest of nine children. His older brothers were Chetan Anand, a producer and director, and Dev Anand, a very famous actor. His sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, was the mother of film director Shekhar Kapur.

Vijay married Sushma Kohli, who was his niece. Their marriage was quite unusual for the time, and some people in society found it surprising. However, Vijay and Sushma had a happy marriage that lasted their whole lives. They had one son together, named Vaibhav Anand.

His Film Career

Vijay Anand did many things in films, like acting, writing, editing, and producing. But he is mostly remembered as a director. He directed his first movie, Nau Do Gyarah, in 1957. It was a big hit! His brother, Dev Anand, starred in the film, and it was filmed very quickly, in just 40 days.

Vijay directed many other successful movies. Some of these include Kala Bazar (1960), Guide (1965), Teesri Manzil (1966), and Jewel Thief (1967). He also directed Johny Mera Naam (1970), Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Ram Balram (1980), and Rajput (1982).

Most of these films were made by Navketan films. This was a production company started by the Anand brothers themselves. A few movies, like Teesri Manzil, Ram-Balram, and Rajput, were made by other producers. The years from 1957 to 1970 were the most successful time in Vijay Anand's career.

His 1965 film Guide was a huge success. It starred Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. The movie was based on a book by R. K. Narayan. Guide was not only his biggest hit but also praised by critics and loved by audiences and music fans. Navketan Films tried to release an English version of Guide internationally, but it didn't do as well.

Vijay Anand was known for how beautifully he filmed songs in his movies. Some famous examples include "O Haseena Zulfonwali" from Teesri Manzil, "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai" from Guide, and "Honthon Mein Aisi Baat" from Jewel Thief.

His Acting Roles

Vijay Anand also acted in films. He first appeared as an actor in Agra Road (1957). Some of his most memorable acting roles were in movies like Kala Bazar (1960), Haqeeqat (1964), and Kora Kagaz (1974). In Kora Kagaz, he acted alongside Jaya Bachchan. He also appeared in Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978).

He acted with Leena Chandavarkar in the thriller Chor Chor (1974). He also starred with Rekha in Ghungroo Ki Awaaz (1981) and Double Cross (1972). With his brother Dev Anand, he acted in Chhupa Rustam (1973) and Tere Mere Sapne, which also featured Hema Malini and Mumtaz.

Later, in the 1990s, many young people knew him for playing the detective "Sam" in the TV show Tehkikaat (1994).

Vijay Anand also worked for a short time as the head of the Central Board of Film Certification. This board is India's censor board, which checks films before they are released. He left this position in 2002.

Vijay Anand, or Goldie as his friends called him, passed away on February 23, 2004. He was 70 years old and died from a heart attack.

His Legacy

Vijay Anand's work has inspired other filmmakers. The thriller film Johnny Gaddar by Sriram Raghavan is dedicated to him. It shows how much Vijay Anand influenced Hindi thrillers. In one scene of Johnny Gaddar, a character watches Vijay Anand's movie Johny Mera Naam and then uses the name "Johnny" to hide his identity. In another scene, an actor is seen reading the book The Guide, which is a nod to one of Vijay Anand's most famous films.

In 2007, a special event was held at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. They showed many of his films to honor his work.

His film Guide has been studied by many writers and thinkers. There is even a book called Guide the Film Perspectives that deeply explores the amazing direction in the movie. He also acted in the TV show Tehkikaat on Delhi Doordarshan.
