Jaya Bachchan (born 9 April 1948) is a famous Indian actress and politician. She is known as one of the best actresses in Hindi movies. She has also been a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha (India's upper house of parliament) for the Samajwadi Party since 2004.
Jaya Bachchan has worked in both Hindi and Bengali films. She is known for her natural acting style in both popular and artistic films. She has won many awards, including eight Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, which is one of India's highest civilian honors.
She started her film career as a teenager in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar (1963). Her first main role as an adult was in the drama Guddi (1971). She was praised for her roles in films like Uphaar (1971), Koshish (1972), and Kora Kagaz (1974). She starred with Amitabh Bachchan in many films, including Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975), and the very popular Sholay (1975). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Abhimaan, Kora Kagaz, and Nauker (1979).
After marrying Amitabh Bachchan and having children, she took a break from acting. She returned to films with Silsila (1981). After a 17-year break, she came back to acting in Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). Bachchan won three Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for playing mothers facing challenges in Fiza (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). She recently starred in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).

Early Life and Education
Jaya Bhaduri was born on 9 April 1948 in Jabalpur, India. She grew up in a Bengali family. Her father, Tarun Kumar Bhaduri, was a writer and poet. She has two sisters, Rita and Nita.
Jaya went to St Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal. She later studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. She graduated with a gold medal, showing her talent and hard work.
Acting Career Highlights
Jaya Bachchan started her acting journey at a young age. She was only 14 when she appeared in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film, Mahanagar (1963). She also acted in other Bengali films like Dhanyee Meye (1971).
Her role in Guddi (1971) made her very popular. She played a schoolgirl who was obsessed with a film star. This role gave her a "girl-next-door" image, meaning she seemed friendly and relatable to everyone. She was known for playing roles that showed the lives of middle-class people in films like Uphaar (1971), Piya Ka Ghar (1972), Parichay (1972), Koshish (1972), and Bawarchi (1972). These films helped her become a superstar.
In Gulzar's Koshish, Jaya Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar played a deaf couple. This film showed their struggles and was a powerful story.
Working with Amitabh Bachchan
Jaya first acted with Amitabh Bachchan in Bansi Birju (1972). They also worked together in Ek Nazar (1972). When Amitabh Bachchan was having a tough time with his films, Jaya agreed to work with him in Zanjeer (1973). This film became a huge hit and helped Amitabh Bachchan become a big star.
They continued to star together in many successful films. These included Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975), and Sholay (1975). Sholay is one of the most famous Indian films ever made.
Return to Acting
After her daughter was born, Jaya Bachchan took a long break from films to focus on her family. She made an exception for Silsila (1981), where she again starred with her husband.
After 17 years, she returned to acting in Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). Her performance in this film was highly praised.
In 2000, she acted in the film Fiza as a mother looking for her missing son. She received her first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for this role. She also won this award for her roles in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). She later acted with her son Abhishek Bachchan in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and Drona (2008).
In 2023, she starred in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which was one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year. Critics praised her strong performance in the movie.
Personal Life

Jaya Bhaduri married actor Amitabh Bachchan on 3 June 1973. They have two children: a daughter named Shweta Bachchan and a son named Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek is also a well-known actor.
Shweta is married to Nikhil Nanda and has two children, Navya Naveli Nanda and Agastya Nanda. Abhishek is married to actress Aishwarya Rai and they have a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan.
Political Career
Jaya Bachchan has also had a successful career in politics. She was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 2004. She represents the state of Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of India's Parliament) for the Samajwadi Party.
She has been re-elected several times, serving multiple terms in the Rajya Sabha. Her political work involves representing her state and party in important discussions and decisions for the country.
