Vijaya Nirmala was a famous Indian actress, producer, and director. She was born Nidudavolu Nirmala on February 20, 1946. She was best known for her work in Telugu cinema.
Vijaya Nirmala directed 44 films in Telugu. In 2002, she made it into the Guinness World Records as the woman who directed the most films. For her amazing contributions to Telugu cinema, she received the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award in 2008. She passed away on June 27, 2019.

Early Life
Vijaya Nirmala was born on February 20, 1946. Her family was Telugu and lived in Tamil Nadu. Her father was a film producer, so she grew up around movies. Her uncle, Nidudavolu Venkatarao, was a well-known scholar.
Family Life
Vijaya Nirmala was first married to Krishna Murthy. They had a son named Naresh, who also became an actor. Later, she married actor Krishna.
Her Film Career
Vijaya Nirmala started acting at a very young age. She was only seven years old when she appeared in her first Tamil movie, Machcha Rekhai (1950).
Acting in Telugu and Malayalam
When she was eleven, she made her debut in Telugu films. This was in the movie Panduranga Mahatmyam (1957). In 1964, she became very popular after starring in the Malayalam film Bhargavi Nilayam with Prem Nazir. She worked with Prem Nazir again in 1967 in Udhyogastha. Her first film in the Telugu industry was Rangula Ratnam.
Tamil Films and Meeting Krishna
Her first Tamil film was Engaveettu Penn. She also acted in other Tamil movies like Panama Paasama, En Annan, Gnanaoli, and Uyira Maanama. She met her second husband, Krishna, while working on her second Telugu film, Saakshi (1967). They acted together in 47 films! It was Saakshi that made her interested in directing movies. Overall, she acted in more than 200 films. About 25 of these were in Malayalam, 25 in Tamil, and the rest were in Telugu.
Becoming a Director
Vijaya Nirmala also worked on television. Her first TV show was Balaji Telefilms' Pelli Kanuka. Soon after, she started her own film company called Vijaya Krishna Movies. She produced 15 films under this banner. She added "Vijaya" to her name to show thanks to the production house.
She made her first film as a director in Malayalam. Then, she directed her first Telugu film, Meena. She directed 40 films in Telugu and one film each in Malayalam and Tamil (Kungumachimizh). She lived in Hyderabad and helped manage Padmalaya Studios and Padmalaya Telefilms Ltd.
Death
Vijaya Nirmala passed away on June 27, 2019. She was 73 years old. She died in Hyderabad from a heart attack.
