Vikidia is a special encyclopedia made just for kids! It's built like a wiki, which means lots of people can help write and edit its articles. Vikidia uses a system called MediaWiki, just like the bigger Wikipedia.

The main goal of Vikidia is to make learning fun and easy for young people, especially those aged 8 to 13. It also helps people who are learning new languages like French, Italian, Spanish, and English. You can find Vikidia in many other languages too, such as Russian, Catalan, Basque, Armenian, and Sicilian.

Vikidia was inspired by WikiKids, a Dutch website. Both are similar to the well-known Wikipedia, but they are designed specifically for young people. While they are great for ages 8 to 13, anyone can use them!

How Vikidia Works

Editing and Safety

Just like Wikipedia, Vikidia is an open wiki. This means anyone can help write or improve articles. It's a great way to share what you know!

Because Vikidia is for children, it's kept very safe. Any content that is not appropriate or is meant to cause trouble, like vandalism, is quickly removed. Special helpers called administrators make sure the site stays friendly and useful for everyone.

Learning and Contributing

Vikidia makes it easy for young people to contribute. Many schools and teachers even use Vikidia for projects. Students can work together to write articles as part of their schoolwork. It's a fun way to learn about different topics and practice writing.

The Simple English Wikipedia is similar to Vikidia. It uses simpler English for people learning the language. However, Vikidia focuses more on being a resource for children.

The Story of Vikidia

When Vikidia Started

Both WikiKids and Vikidia began in November 2006. They were created to offer a safe and easy-to-understand encyclopedia for younger readers.

How Vikidia Grew

The Dutch WikiKids has grown a lot, with about 28,500 articles. The French version of Vikidia also has many articles, around 30,000 as of March 2020.

Over the years, Vikidia has expanded into many languages:

  • The Spanish version started in May 2008.
  • The Italian version launched in 2011.
  • The Russian version began in 2012.
  • The English version joined in 2014.
