Viktor Savelyevich Onopko (Russian: Виктор Савельевич Онопко) was born on October 14, 1969. He is a famous former Russian football defender. After his playing career, he became an assistant coach.
Viktor Onopko currently works as an assistant manager for FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League. He also helps coach the Russia national team. For many years, he held the record for playing the most international games for the Russian national team.

Viktor Onopko's Football Journey
Playing for Clubs
Viktor Onopko started his football career in 1986. He played as a defender, which means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals.
He played for several well-known clubs during his career. These included Shakhtar Donetsk and Spartak Moscow. He also played in Spain for Real Oviedo and Rayo Vallecano. Later, he returned to Russia to play for Alania Vladikavkaz and Saturn Ramenskoye. He retired from playing football in 2005.
Playing for His Country
Viktor Onopko was born in what was then the Soviet Union. He could have chosen to play for either the Ukrainian or Russian national teams. He decided to play for Russia. His brother, Serhiy, chose to play for Ukraine.
Viktor played in many international matches for Russia. He played in the 1994 and 2002 World Cups. He also took part in the 1996 European Championships. In 2003, he helped the Russian team win the Cyprus friendly tournament. He played a total of 109 games for Russia, plus 4 games for the CIS team before Russia had its own team.
After he stopped playing professionally, Viktor Onopko still enjoyed football. In 2009, he was part of the Russian team that won the 2009 Legends Cup, a tournament for former football stars.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Viktor Onopko began a new career as a coach. He worked for 11 years as an assistant coach for CSKA Moscow. This is a very successful football club in Russia.
In July 2021, he became an assistant coach for the Russia national team. He worked alongside the head coach, Valeri Karpin.
In February 2022, football organizations decided that Russian clubs and national teams could not play in international games. Because of this, Valeri Karpin returned to coach FC Rostov, and he brought Viktor Onopko with him as an assistant coach.
Personal Life
Viktor Onopko was born in a city called Voroshilovgrad, which is now known as Luhansk. This city was part of the Soviet Union at the time. After the Soviet Union ended in 1991, he gained both Ukrainian and Russian citizenships.
Viktor has a younger brother named Serhiy. Serhiy also played football professionally, just like Viktor.
