Valery Georgiyevich Karpin (born February 2, 1969) is a famous football manager and a former player. He currently coaches two teams: FC Rostov in the Russian Premier League and the Russian national team.
As a player, he was a midfielder, which is a player who helps both attack and defense. He spent most of his playing career with Spartak Moscow, Real Sociedad, and Celta Vigo. Valery Karpin has citizenship in Russia, Spain, and Estonia.

Playing Career Highlights
Valery Karpin played for several football clubs during his career. He started with Fakel Voronezh in 1989. From 1990 to 1994, he played for Spartak Moscow.
He then moved to Spain, playing for Real Sociedad from 1994 to 1996. After that, he joined Valencia for a season (1996–1997). He spent a long time at Celta Vigo from 1997 to 2002. Later, he returned to Real Sociedad and played there from 2002 until 2005.
International Matches
Karpin played for the Russian national team 72 times, scoring 17 goals. He also played one game for the CIS team.
He scored Russia's first goal after the Soviet Union broke up. This happened in a 2–0 win against Mexico on August 17, 1992. Karpin represented Russia in major tournaments like the 1994 World Cup, Euro 1996, and the 2002 World Cup. In 2003, his team won the Cyprus International Football Tournament.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Valery Karpin became a football manager.
Early Coaching Roles
In August 2008, Karpin became the Director General of Spartak Moscow. In April 2009, he started coaching the team as a temporary manager. He later became the official coach.
He left Spartak Moscow in March 2014. After that, he coached RCD Mallorca starting in August 2014. He also managed Torpedo Armavir for the 2015–2016 season.
Coaching FC Rostov and Russia
On December 19, 2017, Karpin became the new manager of FC Rostov. He signed a contract for two and a half years.
On July 23, 2021, the Russian Football Union hired him to manage the Russian national team. He was supposed to coach both Rostov and the national team at the same time. However, after just two games, he left Rostov on August 2, 2021, to focus on the national team.
Under Karpin, Russia qualified for the second round of the World Cup qualifiers. But due to international events, Russian teams were suspended from international competitions. On March 10, 2022, Karpin extended his contract with the national team and also returned to coach FC Rostov. He has been named the Russian Premier League's coach of the month several times.
In November 2022, Karpin extended his national team contract until August 2024. He extended it again in June 2024, until July 2028.
TV Work
In 2016, Valery Karpin started working as a football analyst for Match TV. He became the editor-in-chief for football broadcasts at the channel in February 2017. He left the channel in July 2017.
Personal Life
Valery Karpin has four daughters: Veronika, Maria, Valeria, and Daria. Since 2017, he has been married to Daria Gordeeva, who is an English teacher and singer. Karpin has Russian citizenship. He also gained Estonian citizenship in 2003 and Spanish citizenship after playing in Spain for many years.
After Retirement from Playing
In 2007, Karpin owned a road bicycle racing team called Karpin–Galicia. He also owns a real estate company with his former teammate, Míchel Salgado.
In 2009, he was part of the Russian team that won the 2009 Legends Cup.
