Valery Karpin is a famous Russian football manager and former player. He was born on February 2, 1969. Valery Karpin is currently the manager for the Russian national team. He also manages the club Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Premier League.
As a player, he was a midfielder. He spent most of his playing career with three main clubs. These were Spartak Moscow, Real Sociedad, and Celta Vigo. Valery Karpin holds citizenship in Russia, Spain, and Estonia.

Playing Career
Club Teams
Valery Karpin played for several football clubs during his career. He started with Fakel Voronezh in 1989. From 1990 to 1994, he played for Spartak Moscow.
After that, he moved to Spain. He played for Real Sociedad from 1994 to 1996. Then he joined Valencia for the 1996–1997 season. He spent a long time at Celta Vigo, from 1997 to 2002. He returned to Real Sociedad for his final years as a player, from 2002 to 2005.
Playing for Russia
Valery Karpin played for the Russian national team 72 times. He scored 17 goals for his country. He also played one game for the CIS team. This was a team formed after the Soviet Union broke up.
He scored Russia's first goal after the Soviet Union split. This happened on August 17, 1992, in a 2–0 win against Mexico. Karpin represented Russia in major tournaments. He played in the 1994 World Cup. He also played in Euro 1996. His last World Cup appearance was in the 2002 World Cup. In 2003, he helped Russia win the Cyprus International Football Tournament. They beat Romania in that final.
Managerial Career
Early Coaching Roles
In August 2008, Valery Karpin became the Director General of Spartak Moscow. He later took over as the team's manager in April 2009. This happened after the previous manager left.
In April 2011, Karpin offered to resign. However, he continued to manage the team until the end of the 2011–2012 season. He became the team's coach again in November 2012. He stayed in this role until March 2014.
After leaving Spartak Moscow, he managed RCD Mallorca starting in August 2014. He then coached Torpedo Armavir for the 2015–2016 season. The team was later renamed FC Armavir. He left the club in June 2016.
FC Rostov and Russia National Team
On December 19, 2017, Karpin became the new manager of FC Rostov. He signed a contract for two and a half years.
In July 2021, the Russian Football Union hired him. He became the manager of the Russia national team. At first, he was expected to coach both Rostov and the national team. However, he left Rostov in August 2021 to focus on the national team.
Under Karpin, Russia finished second in their World Cup qualification group. This meant they moved to the second round of qualifiers. But in February 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russian teams. This was due to the conflict in Ukraine. So, Russia could not play in international competitions.
In March 2022, Karpin extended his contract with the national team. He also returned to manage FC Rostov at the same time. He was recognized as the coach of the month several times in the Russian Premier League.
In November 2022, he extended his national team contract again. This contract is now set to last until August 2024. He extended it again in June 2024, until July 2028. In February 2025, he left his position at Rostov. This was to fully focus on his role with the national team.
Dynamo Moscow
In June 2025, Valery Karpin signed a three-year contract with Dynamo Moscow. He is managing this club while also leading the national team. The Russian Football Union agreed to this arrangement. It will continue as long as the national team's international suspension is in place.
Life After Playing
After retiring from playing football, Valery Karpin started new ventures. In 2007, he became the owner of a road bicycle racing team called Karpin–Galicia. He also owns a real estate company. He started this company with his former Celta Vigo teammate, Míchel Salgado.
In 2009, he was part of the Russian squad. This team won the 2009 Legends Cup.
Personal Life
Valery Karpin has four daughters. Their names are Veronika, Maria, Valeria, and Daria. Since 2017, he has been married to Daria Gordeeva. She is an English teacher, singer, and amateur skater. Valery Karpin has Russian citizenship. He also gained Estonian citizenship in 2003. Later, he received Spanish citizenship after playing in Spain for many years.
