History of Villa Gobernador Gálvez

The city was started by an engineer named Enrico Mosconi. He was an Italian immigrant. The city was founded on February 25, 1888. Enrico Mosconi was the father of General Enrique Mosconi. His son later became the first head of the YPF state oil company.

Dr. José Gálvez was the governor of Santa Fe province. He hired Enrico Mosconi in 1886. Mosconi's job was to plan a railway system. This railway would connect Santa Fe to Mendoza. For this project, Mosconi bought some land. With the governor's permission, he created a village. Many people from Italy and Spain came to live there.

The town officially became a city on April 12, 1962. This was announced by Governor Carlos Sylvestre Begnis. At that time, about 18,000 people lived in the area. Today, "Villa Gobernador Gálvez" is actually three smaller towns joined together. These are V. G. Gálvez proper, Villa Diego, and Pueblo Nuevo.

You can learn about the city's past at the Dr. Raúl Malatesta Municipal Museum. This museum opened in 1986. A group of local citizens helps to run it.
