Where to Find Villa Pesquera
Villa Pesquera is on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, right by the Caribbean Sea. You can find it on Avenida Padre Noel in the barrio Playa area of Ponce.
This fishing village was officially set up in 1992. Before that, it was just a group of fishermen working together. The mayor of Ponce at the time, Rafael Cordero Santiago, helped make it an organized village. There's even a restaurant there called Restaurante Villa Pesquera.
How the Village is Run
Villa Pesquera works like a cooperative. This means the fishermen themselves help manage it. Miguel Ortiz Maldonado is the current president of the group.
The village gets super busy during February and March. This is because of the religious season known as Lent. The fishermen's group is called "Asociación de Pescadores de la Playa de Ponce (APPP)."
Fishing Activities
In 2013, there were 54 active fishermen working at Villa Pesquera. The most popular fish they catch is the Sierra. Many people and restaurants come to the village to buy fresh fish.
Some fishermen focus only on catching Sierra because it's always in high demand. Other popular catches include chillo, carrucho (conch), and lobster.
Villa Pesquera Today
The buildings and docks at Villa Pesquera belong to the city of Ponce. However, the fishermen themselves are in charge of running the daily operations. In 2013, José Montero Rosado was a main spokesperson for the group.
Around July 2013, there was talk that the Ponce city government might let a private company take over running the village.
Keeping the Waters Clear
The waters around Villa Pesquera have had a problem with too much sediment. Sediment is like sand and dirt that builds up at the bottom. This makes it hard for boats to move around.
To fix this, a special project called "dredging" started in 2013. Dredging means removing the extra sediment from the water. The city spent about $185,000 on this project. However, more work was still needed to finish it.
José Santiago Santiago is in charge of the security boats at Villa Pesquera. He knows about the sediment problem. Because of it, the security boats can't use the main dock. Instead, they have to use a different area called Puerto Viejo.
The Boardwalk
Villa Pesquera also has a boardwalk where people can walk and enjoy the views. This boardwalk is part of the docking area. In 2013, the boardwalk was rebuilt. This project cost over $60,000.
