History of Villa Ukika
Founding the Village
Villa Ukika was created in 1967. The naval (navy) leaders in Puerto Williams decided to move the Yaghan people. They had been living in an area called Bahía Mejillones. The Yaghan families then settled in this new village.
Growth and Changes
In the years after it was founded, Villa Ukika grew. The number of people living there reached 58. During this time, the Yaghan people started to adapt to new ways of life. This happened because they could more easily get health care, education, and communicate with others.
Life in the 1990s
By the late 1990s, Villa Ukika had 14 houses. Most of these homes were built from wood and metal. The people who owned these houses lived in them. Two of the most famous residents were sisters Úrsula and Cristina Calderón. They were the last people who spoke the Yaghan language as their first language.
Land Ownership
The Yaghan people who live in Villa Ukika own many of the buildings there. They also own a lot of the land around the village.
Services and Culture
Yaghan Cultural Center
In Villa Ukika, you can find the "Centro de Artesanía Yagán Kipa-Ákar." In the Yaghan language, this means "House of the Woman." This center was built between 2003 and 2004.
Handicrafts and Food
At the cultural center, you can see and buy Yaghan handicrafts. These include baskets made from reeds. They also sell small models of the canoes that the Yaghan people used to travel the southern waters. The center also offers local food. This food mainly includes seafood caught from the ocean.
