A Look at Villa de Mazo's Past
After the island of La Palma was conquered in 1492, Mazo was managed by the town hall in Santa Cruz de la Palma. This changed in 1768 when Mazo started to have its own local government. This government was led by an elected leader called an Alcalde, similar to a mayor.
In 1813, Mazo's local government became officially independent. The nearby area of Fuencaliente de La Palma was once part of Mazo. However, it became a separate municipality in 1837. After big changes in 1868, the first elections for the local government in Mazo were held in January 1869. In these elections, all men over 25 years old could vote.
The main building for the town hall in Mazo was built in 1930. At that time, Spain was a Republic.
In 1956, the municipality of Mazo asked to be called Villa de Mazo. This was to help tell it apart from other places in Spain with similar names. The government officially approved this new name in 1958.
