History of Villalonso
Early Beginnings
Villalonso has a long history. In the year 1147, a nobleman named Osorio Martínez gave the village a special set of rules. These rules were called a fuero. A fuero was like a local law that gave the people of Villalonso certain rights. It also said what they had to give back to the ruler.
What the Fuero Required
The king at the time, Alfonso VII, approved this fuero. In return for these rights, Villalonso had to make a yearly payment. This payment was not money. Instead, they had to give half a sheep, ten loaves of bread, some barley, and some must. Must is a type of fresh grape juice that has not yet been fermented into wine.
