Villamalur is a small town, also called a municipality. It is located in the beautiful Valencian Community in southern Spain. Villamalur is part of the province of Castellón and sits in an area known as Alto Mijares.
One of the most interesting places to see in Villamalur is its old castle. This castle was built a very long time ago, between the 10th and 13th centuries. It has a unique shape, not perfectly round or square.
History of Villamalur
The exact beginning of Villamalur is not fully known. People believe it grew around the old Moorish castle nearby. In 1236, the town was owned by Zayd Abu Zayd. He was the last Almohad governor of Valencia.
Later, Villamalur became a home for the Moriscos. These were people of Muslim heritage who had converted to Christianity. After some time, the Moriscos were forced to leave Spain. Because of this, new people came to live in Villamalur. These new residents came from Castile during the early 1600s.
