A Look at Viola's History
Viola started as a settlement called Blue Springs in the late 1700s. It was an important spot for one of Tennessee's first Separate Baptists churches. Many people from this religious group lived there.
The name changed to Viola when the first post office opened on August 23, 1858. The town was named after a character called Viola from William Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night.
For many years, the Viola Mill was a big part of the town. It made a popular flour brand called "Viola's Best." The mill closed in 1973. Its materials were later used to build another mill at a place called The Farm.
