Viola facts for kids
A viola (say "vee-OH-luh") is a musical instrument. It looks a lot like a violin but is a bit bigger. The viola also sounds lower than a violin. However, it sounds higher than a cello. It has four strings. These strings are named C, G, D, and A. The A string is the highest one. You play the viola with a bow in your right hand. This way of playing is called arco. Sometimes, players pluck the strings instead. This is called pizzicato.

What Makes a Viola Special?
When you see a viola, you might think it's a violin. This is because the viola is only a little bigger. Like the violin, you hold it on your left shoulder. Also, its sound is only five notes lower than a violin's. The biggest difference is how the viola sounds. People often say the viola has a "dark," "earthy," or "mellow" sound. The violin's sound is often brighter.
Viola Strings vs. Violin Strings
The viola's lowest string is the C string. Its highest string is the A string. The violin's lowest string is the G string. Its highest string is the E string. So, if you want to tell them apart, pluck the thinnest string. If it's an A, it's a viola. If it's an E, it's a violin! Even though they can play many of the same notes, each instrument has its own special sound.
Who Makes and Fixes Violas?
A person who builds and repairs violas is called a luthier. They are skilled craftspeople. They make sure the instruments sound their best.
The Viola's Journey to Fame
The viola is sometimes called the "Cinderella of the orchestra." This is because it was not as popular as other instruments. It was often overlooked for solo performances. But two famous violists helped change this. They were Lionel Tertis and William Primrose. They showed everyone how amazing the viola could be as a solo instrument. Thanks to them, the viola gained more popularity.
Where You'll Find a Viola
People who write music often use the viola. It is great for playing harmony notes. These notes add richness to the music.
In String Quartets
The viola is a key part of a string quartet. A string quartet is a small group of four string instruments. It includes two violins, one viola, and one cello.
In Orchestras
You will also find the viola in larger groups. It plays in chamber ensembles. These are small groups of only string instruments. The viola is also a main instrument in a full symphony orchestra. In an orchestra, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments all play together. While the viola can be a solo instrument, it is most often heard in an orchestra.
Viola Sizes
Violas come in many different sizes. They are measured in inches. For example, you might see a 14-inch viola. The size is measured from the bottom of the instrument to its neck. This is the length of its body.
