Viran Morros de Argila, born on December 15, 1983, is a Spanish handball player who has now retired. Many people think he was one of the best defensive players ever in handball.
In 2024, he was honored by being added to the EHF Hall of Fame.
Playing Career
Viran Morros started playing handball a bit later than some, when he was 15 years old. Before that, he played soccer. He was discovered by coaches from FC Barcelona at a summer camp run by Valero Rivera López.
Early Years at FC Barcelona
In the 2000-2001 season, Viran joined the first team at FC Barcelona. He played his first game in the Liga ASOBAL (the top Spanish league) on October 17, 2002. However, he didn't play many games, only 8 matches in three seasons. During this time, he still helped the team win the Spanish League, Spanish Cup, and Spanish Supercup. He also won the EHF European League in 2003.
Moving to Other Clubs
To get more playing time, Viran joined SD Teucro, another team in the same league. Here, he mostly played as a defender. His strong defense caught the eye of other clubs, and he decided to sign with CB Ademar León.
He played for Ademar León from 2004 to 2007. This is where he really became known as a top defensive specialist. His biggest win with this club was the EHF Cup Winners' Cup in the 2004-2005 season.
Success with BM Ciudad Real
In 2007, Viran joined BM Ciudad Real, a team coached by Talant Dujshebaev. With this team, he won the Spanish league three times (in 2008, 2009, and 2010). He also won the EHF Champions League twice (in 2008 and 2009) and the 2010 IHF Super Globe (a world club championship).
Return to FC Barcelona
Even though BM Ciudad Real wanted him to stay, Viran returned to FC Barcelona in 2010. This was a very successful period for him. He won the Spanish league seven times in a row, from 2012 to 2018. He also won the Spanish Cup five times, the Copa ASOBAL (another Spanish cup) seven times, and the Spanish Supercup seven times in a row.
He also won the IHF Men's Super Globe twice more, in 2013 and 2014. Between 2000 and 2018, he played 434 matches in the Spanish League and scored 514 goals. He was named the best defender in the league seven times!
Playing in France, Germany, and Switzerland
In 2018, Viran moved to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain. He stayed there until 2021 and won the French Championship three times. In the 2019-2020 season, he was named the best defender in the French league.
In 2021, Viran moved to Germany and joined Füchse Berlin for one year. Then, in 2022, he moved to Switzerland to play for Pfadi Winterthur. He retired from playing handball after the 2023-2024 season.
National Team Career
Viran Morros played for the Spanish youth national team between 2001 and 2003.
He played his first game for the senior Spanish national team on June 13, 2003.
First Successes
His first big win with the national team was a gold medal at the 2005 Mediterranean Games.
At the 2012 European Men's Handball Championship, Spain finished fourth, but Viran was chosen as the best defender in the "All-Star Team" for the tournament.
World and European Championships
At the 2013 World Men's Handball Championship, which was held in Spain, he won a gold medal with his team. The next year, he won a bronze medal at the 2014 European Men's Handball Championship. In 2016, he won a silver medal at the 2016 European Men's Handball Championship.
He also played in the World Championships in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
Viran won more medals with the Spanish team at the 2018 European Men's Handball Championship (gold) and successfully defended his title at the 2020 European Men's Handball Championship (gold).
Olympic Games and Retirement
At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Viran got injured in the third match and could not continue playing. Despite this, the team went on to win a bronze medal.
His last major international tournament was the 2024 European Men's Handball Championship. He played his final game for the national team on May 12, 2024, more than 20 years after his first game.
