Virden's Past: A Look at Its History
Before 1916, Virden was known as Richmond. This area was first owned by the New Mexico Mining Company. They used it for a special machine called a stamp mill. This machine helped crush silver ore that was mined nearby in Ralston.
After the mine closed, the land was sold in 1916. It was bought by a group of Mormons. These families had moved from Mormon settlements in Chihuahua, Mexico. They left during a big conflict called the Mexican Revolution. The Mormons renamed the village Virden. They named it after the rancher who sold them the land.
