Early Life and Background
Virgil Zwicker grew up on the San Pasqual Indian Reservation in North County, San Diego. His father was a truck driver, and his mother worked hard to support Virgil and his eleven brothers and sisters. Virgil's older brother was a Golden Gloves boxer, and he helped Virgil with his fighting skills.
Zwicker is a member of the Kumeyaay-Ipai tribe. He grew up in a challenging environment. There weren't many chances for him to play organized sports. However, he was a talented football player in Pop Warner. He was known as a smaller player who could hit very hard. He attended Orange Glen High School in Escondido, California.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting Out
Virgil Zwicker's first professional fight happened with only two weeks' notice. He won against Denis Hall in less than a minute by TKO (Technical Knockout). After this, he built an impressive record of 9 wins and 1 loss. He even defeated famous fighters like Ovince St. Preux, who later competed in UFC and Strikeforce.
Fighting in Strikeforce
Zwicker joined Strikeforce, a major MMA organization. He fought Lavar Johnson at Strikeforce Challengers: Bowling vs. Voelker. Zwicker lost this fight in the first round by knockout.
His next fight was against Brett Albee at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley. Zwicker won this match by TKO in the first round.
At Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Cormier, Zwicker faced Guto Inocente. He lost this fight by a unanimous decision from the judges.
Competing in KSW
Zwicker fought Mike Hayes on December 7, 2013, at KSW 25. KSW is a fighting promotion based in Poland. Zwicker won this fight by knockout in the first round. This fight was even named "Fight of the Night" for its excitement.
Time in Bellator MMA
Zwicker signed a contract with Bellator, another big MMA organization. His first fight for Bellator was against Nick Moghadden on September 13, 2013, at Bellator 99. He won by TKO in the first round.
In his second Bellator fight, Zwicker faced Linton Vassell at Bellator 122 on July 25, 2014. He lost this fight by submission in the first round.
Zwicker stepped in to fight UFC veteran Houston Alexander at Bellator 129 on October 17, 2014. This fight ended in a majority draw. This means most of the judges scored it as a draw. Alexander lost a point during the fight for hitting Zwicker's head illegally.
A rematch with Alexander took place at Bellator 132 on January 16, 2015. Zwicker won this second fight by split decision, meaning the judges were not in full agreement.
Zwicker then faced former UFC fighter Razak Al-Hassan at Bellator 137 on May 15, 2015. He won this match by knockout in the first round.
On December 4, 2015, Zwicker fought Brian Rogers at Bellator 147. He lost this fight by submission in the second round.
Zwicker's next fight was against Dan Charles at Bellator 162 on October 21, 2016. He won this fight by TKO in the second round.
World Fighting Championship Akhmat
Zwicker signed a three-fight deal with World Fighting Championship Akhmat, a promotion from Chechnya, Russia. He made his debut for them on May 21, 2017.
Kickboxing Career
Virgil Zwicker also competed as a Muay Thai kickboxer. His first kickboxing match was the main event of WCK Muay Thai: Bad to the Bone in Temecula, California, on April 6, 2013. He lost this fight to Sergio Piqué by split decision. He had a rematch with Piqué on February 15, 2014, in Temecula, California.
