Virginia Gilmore was born in El Monte, California, on July 26, 1919. Her father had been an officer in the British Army before he retired.
Acting Career
Virginia started her acting career on stage in San Francisco. She was only 15 years old at the time. In 1939, she moved to Los Angeles to try acting in movies.
When her movie career was not going well, Virginia decided to be brave. She went to meet a famous movie producer named Samuel Goldwyn. After their meeting, he promised her a screen test. Soon, she began getting small roles in movies.
Her most well-known movie roles happened in 1941. She starred in Western Union, directed by Fritz Lang. She also appeared in Swamp Water, directed by Jean Renoir.
Broadway and Television
As movie roles became harder to find, Virginia moved to New York City. She started working on Broadway, which is famous for live theater shows. She had first appeared on Broadway in 1934.
In 1943, she acted in plays like Those Endearing Young Charms. She also performed in The World's Full of Girls. In 1944, she played the main character in a play called Dear Ruth. This play was directed by Moss Hart. Other Broadway shows she was in include Truckline Cafe (1946) and Critics Choice (1960).
Starting in the late 1940s, Virginia Gilmore also had many roles on television. In 1949, she and her husband, Yul Brynner, were on an NBC television show called We're On. From 1966 to 1968, she taught drama at Yale University.
Personal Life
In 1944, Virginia Gilmore married the actor Yul Brynner. They had one son together, named Yul "Rock" Brynner. The couple later divorced in 1960.
Later Years and Passing
Virginia Gilmore passed away on March 28, 1986. She was 66 years old. She died at her home in Santa Barbara, California. After her death, she was cremated, and her ashes were scattered at sea.
