Vitaly Ivanovich Vorotnikov (Russian: Вита́лий Ива́нович Воротнико́в; 20 January 1926 – 19 February 2012) was an important politician and diplomat from the Soviet Union. He held a top position as the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian SFSR from 1988 to 1990.
Early Life and Education
Vitaly Vorotnikov was born in Voronezh, a city in what was then the Russian SFSR. In 1940, when he was 14, he started studying aircraft engine technology at a local college.
When the Soviet Union joined World War II, many adult workers went to serve in the army. At just 16 years old, Vitaly began working at a train repair plant in Voronezh. As the war got closer to his city, he was moved to Kuybyshev. He spent most of the war there, working at an aviation plant and continuing his studies at an aviation technology school.
Political Career and Diplomacy
After the war, Vitaly Vorotnikov kept working at the aviation plant. He held management roles and also helped organize activities for the Communist Party at the plant. While working, he also took evening classes and earned an engineering degree in 1954.
From 1950 to 1960, he led the Communist Party committee at his plant. He then moved up to a more important role in the party in the Kuybyshev Oblast region in 1960. For nearly 20 years, he held various important regional positions in Russia.
From 1979 to 1982, he served as the Soviet ambassador to Cuba. This meant he represented the Soviet Union in Cuba. After this, he returned to the Soviet Union when the leader, Brezhnev, passed away.
Vitaly Vorotnikov then took charge of the Communist Party in the Krasnodar Krai region for a short time. Soon after, he was called to Moscow to take on some of the highest government jobs in the RSFSR.
He became a candidate member, and then a full member, of the Politburo. The Politburo was a very powerful group that made important decisions for the Communist Party.
From 1983 to 1988, he was the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR. This role was like being the head of the government for the Russian part of the Soviet Union. Then, from 1988 to 1990, he became the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian SFSR. This was a very high leadership position.
After he retired, Vitaly Vorotnikov wrote several books about his life and experiences.
