Fun Festivals and Traditions
Vitigudino is known for its lively festivals. The two most important celebrations are "Los Corpus" and "Ferias."
Los Corpus Festival
The "Los Corpus" festivities usually begin on a Wednesday. The fun starts with an opening event, often called a "chupinazo," in the Plaza de España (Spain Square). Later that night, there's a "capea-verbena" in the bullring, which is like a party with young bulls.
The main day for "Los Corpus" is the traditional Corpus Thursday. On this day, people celebrate a special Mass. After the Mass, there is a procession where the Blessed Sacrament is carried under a canopy through the town's main streets.
During the procession, the streets are decorated with thyme, and small altars are set up. People pray and throw flower petals as the procession passes. In the afternoon, there's a costume contest where many people dress up. At night, a "confinement" takes place, which is a type of bull run.
Friday and Saturday have similar activities. There are traditional bull runs for adults at noon, and special cart runs for children. In the afternoon, there are more "capeas" (bull events) in the bullring. At night, everyone enjoys dancing in the Plaza de España. These events are filled with music from brass bands, local wine, good food, and a colorful atmosphere created by many groups of friends. Sometimes, a fun "charlotada" is performed in the bullring. This is where a group of friends dresses up in costumes and acts out funny scenes with a young heifer. On Sunday, the religious festival is repeated, followed by another "confinement" that marks the end of the celebrations.
Ferias Festival
The "Ferias" festival is celebrated on August 15th. This day honors the Virgen del Socorro (Virgin of Help). Her image is kept in a small church, called a hermitage, on a high part of the town. Before the festival, the image is moved to the main church for nine days of preparation, called a "Novena."
On August 15th, a special Mass is held, followed by a procession. The Virgin's image is carried back to her hermitage. Many women and girls join the procession, wearing traditional "charro" costumes or special mantillas (lace veils). Once at the hermitage, people offer flowers to the Virgin.
The "Ferias" festival is also famous for its colorful parade of floats on the night of August 15th. On August 16th, there is a very old cattle market, which is a big event. During these days, there are usually bullfighting events and other festivals to enjoy.
