Vivien is an abandoned mining town. It is located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. You can find it between the towns of Leinster and Leonora.

The History of Vivien: From Harris to a Mining Town

Vivien started its life with a different name. In 1903, it was first known as Harris. The town began to grow and develop.

How Vivien Got Its Name

By 1905, the local community wanted more land for the town. They asked for new areas to be measured out. Around this time, the town's name changed to Vivien. This new name came from two important local places: the Vivien Gold Mine and the Vivien Gem Reef. Both were very close to the town.

The government officially recognized Vivien as a townsite in 1906. This process is called "gazetting."

The Inspiration Behind the Name Vivien

Many people believe the town was named after a writer. Her name was May Vivienne. She wrote a book in 1902 about her travels. This book described her adventures in the Western Australian goldfields. It is thought that the town's name was a way to honor her.
