Education and Early Life
Vivienne Ming went to Carnegie Mellon University. She earned her Master of Science degree in 2003. Later, in 2006, she received her PhD in Psychology. She also studied computational neuroscience there. This field combines computer science with brain science.
In 2016, she returned to her university to give a special speech.
Career and Research in AI
After getting her PhD, Vivienne Ming worked at Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley. She was a research scientist and visiting scholar.
She has worked with different groups to improve education and health. She helped start a group called Socos. This group gives advice on artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and making schools better.
Vivienne Ming has shown that the usual ways companies hire people don't always predict how well someone will do at work. She also worked with a company called Accenture. She helped them find ways to train their employees to be more creative.
AI Tools for Learning
Vivienne Ming has published research on how Artificial intelligence (AI) can help in education. She created a tool called "Muse." Muse uses machine learning to help parents. Machine learning is when computers learn from data without being directly programmed.
Muse suggests activities based on research. These activities help young people become more creative. They also help kids feel more motivated and understand their feelings better. This is called emotional intelligence.
Her research also shows that certain skills are very important for life. These skills include:
- Metacognition: Thinking about how you think and learn.
- Socio-emotional competence: Understanding and managing your own feelings and getting along with others.
- Creativity: Coming up with new ideas.
- Curiosity: Wanting to learn and explore.
These skills can greatly affect a person's health, how productive they are, their education, and how happy they are in life.
Awards and Public Speaking
Vivienne Ming is a popular speaker. In May 2017, she gave a TEDx Talk. She talked about how to make people better.
She has spoken about machine learning in Brazil. She also talked about artificial intelligence and neural networks in Ireland and at the Royal Society in 2018. Neural networks are computer systems inspired by the human brain.
She has appeared on the PC Magazine podcast Fast Forward. She has also been featured on BBC Radio 4 and NPR.
In 2017, the BBC included her in their "Top 100 Women." This list celebrates women who are making a difference.
