History of La Viñuela

The town of La Viñuela started to grow in the 1700s. It began around a building called La Venta La Viña. This building was a place where travelers could rest and get food and water. They were often on their way between the coast and the city of Granada. Today, this old building is still a meeting spot for the town's older residents.

The town got its name from the grapevines that grew in the area. Local wine was sold at La Venta La Viña. The word "Viñuela" means "small vineyard." In 2011, about 1,980 people lived in the town.

La Viñuela officially became a town in 1764. Its first mayor was Juan Lucas García del Rey. But people lived in this area long before that. When the lake was being built, workers found 14 old sites. These sites showed that people lived here during the Stone Age and Roman times. They found remains of ancient huts, tools made of stone, and pottery.

Local Government

La Viñuela is governed by a mayor and a town council. The mayor is the head of the town. The current mayor is Juan José Jiménez López. He is part of the PSOE.
