Vladimir Jugović (born on August 30, 1969) is a famous Serbian former footballer. He was a very flexible player who could play in many different positions in the midfield. He often played as a left or attacking midfielder.

Vladimir Jugović played for many top teams in Europe. He won the European Cup and Intercontinental Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991. He won both of these big competitions again with Juventus in 1996. Many people think he is one of the best footballers Serbia has ever had. He is also considered one of the best midfielders of his time. He played for Yugoslavia in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2000. He played 41 international games and scored three goals between 1991 and 2002.

Playing for Clubs

Starting at Red Star Belgrade

Vladimir Jugović was first noticed by Red Star Belgrade when he was just 15 years old. After playing his first game for Red Star, he was loaned to FK Rad for a short time. When Ljupko Petrović became the coach of Red Star, Jugović returned to the main team.

In 1991, Jugović played in the 1991 European Cup Final, which Red Star won. This was a huge victory! Later, he helped Red Star win the Intercontinental Cup. They beat Colo-Colo 3–0, and Jugović scored the first two goals in that important match. By the end of his time with Red Star, he was given the "Star of Red Star" award. This made him one of the most celebrated footballers in Yugoslavia.

Success with Sampdoria

After his time at Red Star, Jugović moved to Sampdoria in Italy. He played there for three successful seasons. During this time, he helped his team win the 1993–94 Coppa Italia, which is Italy's main cup competition. He even scored two goals in a semi-final match against Arsenal in 1995.

Winning Big with Juventus

In 1995, Jugović joined Juventus, another big Italian club. In his first season, Juventus finished second in the league. But the biggest moment came in the 1996 UEFA Champions League Final. He came into the game as a substitute. The game ended in a 1–1 draw, so it went to a penalty shootout. Jugović scored the winning penalty against Ajax! He later said he felt very calm before taking that shot.

After this amazing win, Jugović stayed with Juventus for one more season. He helped them win the 1996 Intercontinental Cup by beating River Plate 1–0. That same season, Juventus also won the 1996–97 Serie A title, which is the top Italian league. After these wins, Jugović left Juventus. He played 77 games for Juventus and scored 10 goals.

Jugović often talked about how hard they trained at Juventus under coach Marcello Lippi. He said they trained so much that it was amazing to watch. They would start with gym work, then running, and then tactical training. He believed their success came from this incredibly hard work.

Other Teams He Played For

In 1997, Jugović moved to Lazio for one season. There, he won his second Coppa Italia in 1998. Lazio also reached the final of the 1998 UEFA Cup Final but lost to Inter Milan.

After Lazio, Jugović played for Atlético Madrid in Spain for a year. Then he joined Inter Milan in Italy, where he stayed for two seasons. He finished his career playing for LR Ahlen in Germany, after also playing for AS Monaco FC in France and Admira Wacker in Austria.

Playing for His Country

Jugović first played for the Yugoslavia national team in August 1991. He was chosen to play in UEFA Euro 1992, but Yugoslavia was not allowed to play in the tournament because of the Yugoslav Wars.

For his country, Jugović usually played as a left winger. However, during Euro 2000, his coach used him as a central midfielder. He played in every game for Yugoslavia at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. In a match against the Netherlands, he was fouled, which led to a penalty kick. Unfortunately, his teammate missed the shot.

Even though Jugović missed some games before Euro 2000 due to injury, he was still called up for the tournament. He played as a central midfielder in the quarterfinal match against the Netherlands, which Yugoslavia lost.

How He Played the Game

Vladimir Jugović was a very flexible and strong player. He was right-footed and worked very hard on the field. He usually played on the left side of the midfield or as an attacking midfielder. But he could play anywhere in the midfield, including in the center, in a defensive role, or on the right.

Many people consider him one of Serbia's best players and one of the best midfielders of his time. He was known for his determination, energy, and smart play. He was also good at tackling the ball from opponents. Jugović was a talented player with good technique. He could start attacks with long passes or control the game in the midfield. He also had a powerful shot and could score goals. Sometimes, he even played as a second striker or a full-back. Even though he was very skilled, he often had injuries during his career.
