Vladimir Lvovich Mashkov (Russian: Владимир Львович Машков; born November 27, 1963) is a famous Russian actor. He is also a talented director for both movies and plays.

Many people in Western countries know him from movies like Behind Enemy Lines (2001) and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011). Vladimir Mashkov has also directed, produced, and written films. One of his notable works as a director is the 2004 Russian film Papa.

Early Life and Education

Vladimir Mashkov was born on November 27, 1963, in Tula, which was part of the Soviet Union at that time. His mother, Natalia, was a director for a puppet theater. His father, Lev Mashkov, was an actor.

Vladimir started acting when he was a child. He performed in school plays and with his parents at the Novokuznetsk Puppet Theater. In the late 1970s, he briefly studied biology at Novosibirsk State University.

Later, he joined the Novosibirsk Theater School. He was expelled in 1984 due to his behavior. In 1990, he finished his studies at the Moscow Art Theater School. There, he was taught by the well-known actor and director Oleg Tabakov.

Vladimir Mashkov's Acting Career

From 1989 to 1990, Vladimir Mashkov was an actor at the Moscow Art Theater. In 1990, he joined the acting group at the Oleg Tabakov Theater. He performed in many plays there, including The Sailor's Silence and The Inspector General.

Since 1992, Mashkov also started directing plays at the Tabakov Theater. He directed shows like Star Time on Local Time and Passion for Bumbarash. He also directed plays at other theaters, such as The Threepenny Opera and "No. 13".

Early Film Roles

Mashkov's first movie role was in 1989 in Green Goat Fire. He then appeared in films like Do It – One! (1990) and Me Ivan, You Abraham (1993). He became widely known in 1994 for his main roles in Limit and Moscow Nights.

In 1995, he starred in the movie American Daughter. One of his most famous roles from this time was Tolyan in The Thief (1997). This film was even nominated for an Oscar. In 2000, he played Emelian Pugachev in the historical film Russian Rebellion.

Hollywood and International Films

In the early 2000s, Vladimir Mashkov acted in several Hollywood movies. These included Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000), 15 Minutes (2001), and Behind Enemy Lines (2001).

In 2002, Mashkov played a rich Russian businessman named Platon Makovsky in the film Tycoon. The next year, he appeared on TV in The Idiot, a show based on a famous novel.

Directing and Recent Works

In 1997, Vladimir Mashkov directed his first movie, a comedy called The Orphan of Kazan. In 2004, he directed, wrote, and produced the film Daddy. He also acted in this movie.

He continued to act in many films, such as The State Counselor (2005) and Piranha (2006). He also appeared in the American TV series Alias. In 2007, he played a detective in the TV series Liquidation.

In 2011, Vladimir Mashkov was in the big American movie Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. He played a Russian agent named Sidorov. More recently, he starred in the disaster film Flight Crew (2016) as an experienced pilot. In 2017, he played a basketball coach in the sports drama Going Vertical. This film was about the Soviet basketball team that beat the US team at the 1972 Olympics.

In 2018, he became the artistic director of the Oleg Tabakov Theatre.

Other Activities

In 2011, Vladimir Mashkov started a special award called the "Golden Lion." This award is for children's puppet theaters and is named after his mother, Natalya Nikiforova. The award recognizes the best actors and actresses in these children's theater groups.

Political Views

Vladimir Mashkov is a member of the political party called United Russia. He has supported the Russian government and its leaders.

In 2022, he shared his support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine on social media. He also spoke at a rally in Moscow that supported the government's actions. Because of his support, the European Union placed sanctions on him in July 2022. This means certain restrictions were put on him. In 2024, a court in Ukraine made a ruling against him, and his apartment in Odesa was taken.

Grand Theft Auto IV Game

Vladimir Mashkov has said that he talked with the creators of the video game Grand Theft Auto IV. He claims they wanted him to voice the character Niko Bellic. He also believes that the character's look is based on him, especially from his role in the movie Behind Enemy Lines. However, he turned down the offer. The game creators, Rockstar Games, have not commented on his claims.

Personal Life

Vladimir Mashkov has been married four times. He has one daughter named Maria from a previous marriage. In 2022, his daughter expressed different views from him regarding political events. This led to a public disagreement between them.

In 2016, Forbes magazine listed him as one of the wealthiest famous people in Russia.
