Vladimir Maksimovich Salkov was a famous football player and coach from Russia and Ukraine. He was born on April 1, 1937, and passed away on July 9, 2020. People knew him as a great defender on the field and a very successful manager.

He earned special titles like 'Merited Coach of Ukraine' in 1975 and 'Merited Coach of the USSR' in 1989. Many consider him a true legend for the Shakhtar Donetsk football club, where he spent much of his career.

Vladimir Salkov's Playing Career

Vladimir Salkov started playing football in the youth team of FC Shakhtar Donetsk. He then joined their main team in 1960 and played there until 1969. Before joining Shakhtar's senior team, he also played for other clubs like SKVO Orenburg and Krylia Sovetov Kuybyshev.

During his time with Shakhtar, Salkov helped his team win the Soviet Cup twice. These big wins happened in 1961 and 1962. He was an important part of their defense during these championship seasons.

Coaching and Management

After he stopped playing football in 1969, Salkov began a long and successful career as a coach. His first coaching job was at Metallurg Zhdanov. Later, he returned to his beloved club, Shakhtar Donetsk, where he had played for many years.

Coaching Achievements

Salkov had many important roles as a coach. He managed several clubs in the USSR, Russia, and Ukraine. He also coached two national teams: the USSR national team and the Uzbekistan national team.

One of his biggest achievements was winning an Olympic gold medal in 1988. He was an assistant coach for the Soviet team at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He also led several Soviet national youth football teams in the 1980s, helping young players develop their skills.

Sporting Director Role

Besides coaching, Salkov also worked as a sporting director. From 2005 to 2007, he held this position at CSKA Moscow. In this role, he helped manage the club's sports operations and player development.
