The Vogel Place Historic District is a special neighborhood in Ottumwa, Iowa. It's recognized as a historic district across the whole country. This means its buildings and history are important to remember. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. When it was listed, it had many old buildings and structures that tell a story.

History of Vogel Place

The land where the Vogel Place Historic District now stands once belonged to E.B. and Elizabeth Vogel. That's how the area got its name! After E.B. passed away, their daughters inherited the land.

In 1907, a map of the new neighborhood was officially approved. The daughters started selling pieces of land, called lots, in 1908. Most of the houses you see in the district today were built in the 1920s and 1930s.

The Ottumwa Electric Railroad used to run along North Court Street. This train was a super important way for people to travel. It helped them get to the main part of the city for shopping and work. Vogel Place was also one of the first neighborhoods in Ottumwa where having a garage for your car was a big deal.

A building called St. Joseph Hospital was built in 1925. It's also a historic building in the district. It even became its own historic district in 2015!

Homes and Buildings

The Vogel Place Historic District covers an area with many interesting features. It includes 91 houses, a hospital, and a church. There's even a street paved with bricks! You can also spot four unique driveways.

Most of the houses are simple, middle-class homes. They are usually one or two stories tall. Many of them are made of wood. You'll often find a small garage behind these houses. Some homes have exteriors made of brick, and a couple are built with concrete blocks.

Popular House Styles

About a quarter of the houses in the district were built in the Bungalow or American Craftsman styles. These homes were constructed between 1912 and 1930. The Tudor Revival style was also very popular. You can see examples with half-timbered walls or a cozy English Cottage look.

Larger homes in the Romantic Revival styles are found along North Court Street. Some other big homes from the 1920s were built in the Colonial Revival style. If you walk along Vogel Avenue, you'll also find five examples of American Four Square houses.
