Olivera Vojna Nešić (born October 6, 1947) is a Serbian composer and a professor at the University of Priština's Faculty of Arts. She is known for her beautiful music and for helping other musicians, especially women.

Learning and Music Education

Vojna Nešić studied music for many years. She finished her first degree at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade in 1983. Later, she continued her studies and completed her advanced degree at the University of Sarajevo Music Academy in 1991.

Teaching Music to Students

Since 1994, Professor Nešić has been teaching at the University of Priština Faculty of Arts. She teaches students about Harmony, which is how different musical notes sound good together. She also teaches Composition, which is the art of creating new music.

Helping Musicians and Artists

Vojna Nešić is very active in the music world. She helped start an organization called Women in Music (in Serbian, Žene u muzici). This group is part of a bigger international foundation called Fondazione Adkins Chiti: Donne in Musica. Their main goal is to support and promote female musicians.

Leading Music Competitions

As the president of Women in Music, Professor Nešić has been the artistic director for an international competition called "Donne in musica". This competition is part of a project called Youth for Peace and Justice. It takes place every year in different cities in Serbia, like Kragujevac, Kruševac, Belgrade, and Zvečan.

Cultural Leadership

Besides her work with Women in Music, she has also been the director of the Royal Cultural Center in Kragujevac. This shows her dedication to promoting culture and arts.

  • She is the only composer from the Balkans region whose two musical pieces were published in a German encyclopedia. This book, called Piano Music of Female Composers from 17th to 20th century, features piano music by women composers.
  • In 1981 and 1982, she won the "Mokranjac" prize in Belgrade.
  • In 1989, her symphonic poem "Alkar" received an Award of Merit in Miami, United States.
  • Also in 1989, her piece "Essence" for string orchestra was a finalist in the International Competition "New Music" in the USA.

  • In 1990, she was a member of the international jury for a composition competition in Corciano, Italy.
  • Her work "Impressions" for wind orchestra had its first performance in Corciano-Perugia in 1991.
  • She was a guest lecturer at CSUN (California State University Northridge, Los Angeles) in 1991.
  • In 1993, her piece "Arabesque" for Clarinet was first performed in Fairbanks, Alaska.
  • Her biography was included in The New Grove Dictionary, a famous music dictionary, in 1994.
  • In 1996, "At summer’s End" had its first performances in Fairbanks, Alaska, and at Indiana University.
  • In 1999, her "Concerto in Thema Kyr Stefan per i 10 strumenti" was a finalist in the International Competition "Santa Cecilia" in Alba Adriatica, Bologna.
  • Her "Sonata" for Flute was first performed in London in 1999.
  • In 2001, she received the IBLA "Grand Prize 2001-Accomplished musician" from the IBLA Foundation in New York.
  • Her "Toccata" for piano was performed in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2002.
  • In 2003, all her piano works were published in an international collection called "Klaviermusik von Komponistinnen vom 17. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert" in Germany.
  • Her works have had their first performances in many cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Fairbanks, Indiana, Mannheim, London, Bologna, and Munich.
  • She is a member of several international organizations, including "Frau und Musik" in Germany and IAWM Abilene in the USA. She is also part of the Serbian Composers Union.
  • In 1993, she founded and became the artistic director of the Chamber Choir "KIR STEFAN SRBIN" in Kragujevac.
  • In 2003, she became the Director of the Royal Cultural Center in Kragujevac.
  • Also in 2003, she founded the Festival "Youth for Justice and Peace" in Kragujevac.
  • In 2003, she founded and became the President of the International Association "Women in Music" ("Žene u muzici") in Serbia.
  • In 2005, she became the President of the Board of Directors of the National Museum in Kragujevac.
