The name Wachapreague comes from the Wachapreague people, an Algonquian group. These people lived in the area many centuries ago.

A special place called Bunting Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This means it is an important historical site.

Wachapreague is a very small town, covering about 0.3 square miles (0.7 square kilometers) of land.

The town is known for the Wachapreague Channel. This channel winds through the seaside marsh and out to the barrier islands.
