Waddington is a small village in the Selwyn District of the Canterbury region. It is located on New Zealand's South Island, close to the Waimakariri Gorge.

About Waddington Village

Waddington got its name from William Waddington. He bought land from the Homebush area and planned the village in 1873.

Waddington is very close to its neighbour, Sheffield. Sheffield is only about 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) away. Both villages work together and share a community committee.

Location and History

Waddington and Sheffield are found between Darfield and Springfield. They are on State Highway 73 and the Midland Line railway. Farmers first settled these towns in the 1800s. They came because the land was great for raising sheep.

Waddington is an important spot for roads. Three main roads meet here, including popular tourist routes like the Inland Scenic Route and the Great Alpine Highway.

Local Facilities

The village has its own cemetery, which started in 1882. It was first called the East Malvern Cemetery. In 1880, its name changed to the Waddington Cemetery.

Waddington is also home to the St John Youth New Zealand South Island Training Camp. This camp helps young people learn important first aid and community skills.
