History of Waddinxveen
How Waddinxveen Started
The first time Waddinxveen was mentioned in history was in 1233. On April 20, Floris IV, Count of Holland, sold some land. This land was full of peat, which is a type of soil made from decayed plants. It was located along the Gouwe River. He sold it for 200 Dutch pounds to Nicolas of Gnepwijk. Because of this important event, Waddinxveen celebrated its 750th birthday in 1983.
Changes Over Time
For a period between 1817 and 1870, Waddinxveen was split into two separate areas. These were called Noord-Waddinxveen (North Waddinxveen) and Zuid-Waddinxveen (South Waddinxveen). As the area grew bigger, these two parts joined back together. They became one municipality again.
