The Waikari River is a river found in the northern part of the Canterbury area. This region is located on New Zealand's South Island. The river plays an important role in the local landscape.

Exploring the Waikari River

The Waikari River is about 41 kilometers (25 miles) long. It starts its journey in the hills south of a town called Hawarden. From there, it flows mostly towards the east.

The River's Journey

As the Waikari River travels, it moves through a wide, flat valley. This type of valley, often created by a river, is sometimes called a "strath." The river slowly turns towards the northeast.

It continues its path until it meets another, larger river. This meeting point is with the Hurunui River. The two rivers join together about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of the town of Cheviot. The Waikari River joins the Hurunui River at an elevation of about 80 meters (262 feet) above sea level.
